Sprint Corp. Invests in NE Wyandotte County Agency

The North East Business Association (NEBA) received a $20,000 donation from the Sprint Corporation as part of its diversity obligation, through one of its partnering companies, Affiliated Computer Services (ACS) in Dallas, Texas. NEBA Steering Committee Member Jim Churchman, formerly at Sprint, was responsible for securing the donation. Sprint has been a continuing supporter for the NEBA and this is the second donation toward community revitalization. The funds will allow NEBA to begin its efforts toward an Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) strategy.

ABCD activities will be begin in September and will involve mobilizing the community through existing neighborhood and community organizations to create an Asset Mapping Project. The first phase of this project will be to identify the existing “people power” in the community and those who are willing to provide volunteer hours to support a “Community Empowerment” effort. Be sure to watch for more information regarding this project to benefit northeast Wyandotte County.

In the big picture, in order to secure the health of a community, it involves overall Community Empowerment. This includes “economic development,” “community development” and youth development. The North East Business Association will work in partnership with others to accomplish this within our designated target area in northeast Wyandotte County, as well as throughout the Kansas City area.

Episode Information: First Charter School in KCK Prepares for 2008The Northeast Business Association will open Kansas City Kansas’ first charter school in 2008. The KCK School board received six applications for charters and picked just one. The school will be called the Maurice R. Holman Academy of Excellence, named after the association’s founder, who passed away last year. KCUR’s Ty Chandler spoke to Chiquita Coggs, Executive Director of the Northeast Business Association.

Joining the NEBA

The organization is currently accepting new members and applications from individuals who would also like to serve on the NEBA’s working board.
